Combat Toxic Energy & Rejuvenate Your Emotional Life

Emotions can come at you hard and fast. You must be prepared.

In a flash, negativity can spin you into a tizzy, your center blown to smithereens. Not to worry. In my book, “Emotional Freedom” I provide readers with strategies for dealing with every angle of emotions–cerebral and intuitive, from earth to heaven.

There are four major components of emotions: their biology, spirituality, energetic power, and psychology. Together, these components create an elegant portrait of your emotional self, revealing breakthroughs about how you operate that will lead to freedom. Here is a summary of these four secrets that I discuss in “Emotional Freedom” to help you combat toxic energies and keep your peace of mind.

Secret 1: Reprogram the Biology of Your Emotions

To know thyself, you must know some basics of your biology. Biology lends piercing insights into our emotions. It is the awesome science of life that defines the laws of how living things relate, both physically and emotionally. All emotions trigger biological reactions that shape your health just as distinctly as what you choose to eat or how you choose to exercise. When you learn to change your emotional reaction to a situation, you change your biological reaction as well.

Emotional stress depletes your body and calm revives it. Finding calm is an emotionally stressed out person’s salvation, a humane time-out from turmoil when you’re centered and at ease. Stress hormones wane, as spasms in your shoulders and gut loosen, heart rate and blood pressure lower, mental frenzy relents. Your body can breathe freely again and gratefully releases its guard to become more open, soft, expansive.

Applying the First Secret: Reprogram the Biology of Your Emotions

Reduce Stress With This Three-Minute Meditation

  • Find a comfortable, quiet place. Wearing loose clothing, settle into a relaxed position in a spot where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Focus on your breath to quiet thoughts. Eyes closed, gently place your awareness on your breath. Be conscious only of breathing in and breathing out. Maintain a centered state of calm by continuing to follow the movement of your breath.
  • Breathe in calm, breathe out stress. Let yourself feel the sensuality of inhaling and exhaling as air passes through your nostrils and chest like a cool breeze. With each slow, deep breath, feel yourself inhaling calm, sweet as the scent of summer jasmine, then exhaling stress.

This simple, stress-busting meditation is an initial action step you can take to forge a winning partnership with your biology. Practicing it, you’ll become increasingly adept at upping endorphins and short-circuiting your flight-or-flight response, biological gifts of meditation.

Secret 2: Uncover the Spiritual Meaning of Your Emotions

As a psychiatrist, I’m in the sacred position of getting to hear what goes on in people’s heads, from soccer moms to movie stars. Despite how externally different we may seem we all have basic emotional commonalities, and often keep getting similarly sabotaged. Everyone wants love, but negativity, our own or another’s, often subverts us. So what is our suffering for? The puzzle can be solved, but it requires a spiritual perspective.

Spirituality, as I’m defining it, is a quest for meaning that goes beyond the linear mind to access a vaster force of compassion to frame everything. Spirituality is freeing because it means opening the heart and doing your darndest to see every nanosecond of existence through this aperture. Always, you must ask, “How can a situation–any situation–help me grow and develop loving-kindness toward myself or others?”

Applying the Second Secret: Uncover the Spiritual Meaning of Your Emotions

A Heart Centering Meditation to Counter Negative Self-Talk

  • Settle down. In a tranquil setting, sit comfortably and close your eyes. Take a few long, deep breaths to relieve tension. Even if your negative thoughts are going a mile a minute keep concentrating on your breath as best you can.
  • Tune into your heart. Lightly rest your palm over your heart in the mid-chest. This energy center is the entryway to compassion and spirit. In a relaxed state, inwardly request to connect with a higher power, a force greater than yourself that links you to love. Then, in your heart area, notice what you intuitively feel, not what you think. You may experience a soothing warmth, comfort, clarity, even bliss. I often get shivers, a wave of goose bumps, or am moved to tears. If negative self-talk still arises, keep your compassion flowing; the self is doing the best it can.

This meditation is a surefire antidote to negative self-talk. I’ve never seen anyone able to sustain a denigrating diatribe when they’re centered in the heart.

Secret 3: Learn the Energetic Power of Your Emotions

In Energy Psychiatry I’ve learned to see emotions as a stunning expression of energy. Positive ones nurture you. Negative ones deplete you. You feel emotions internally, while their energy extends beyond your body, affecting everyone you contact. Similarly, the emotions of others can register in you. I’d like you to begin to think of emotions in terms of subtle energy, a “vibe” emanating from yourself and others, an intimate sensing. Subtle energy is right in front of you, but isn’t visible. It can be felt inches or feet from the body.

I realize that it’s one thing to know this, and yet another to live it. The problem is that negative emotional energy is basically louder, wilder, and more seductively grabs your attention than the positive. On an intuitive level, emotions such as grief and terror are easier to sense than the lower keyed vibes of calmness or confidence. It’s important that you channel this knowledge into new behaviors so you’re not the doomed moth eternally drawn to the flame.

Applying the Third Secret: Learn The Energetic Power of Your Emotions

Try An Intuitive Experiment: Sense the Difference Between Positive and Negative Emotions

In this experiment, you’re going to compare two scenarios. With both observe how your words and tone affect your body and emotional state. Spend at least a few minutes trying these words on.

Scenario 1. Stand in front of a mirror and sincerely say to yourself in a loving, appreciative tone, “I look terrific and I’m a fantastic person.” Stay focused on your positives. Then feel, don’t think. Notice: How does your body react? Are you breathing easier? Do your shoulders relax?

Scenario 2. Stand in front of the mirror and say in your nastiest, most hateful tone, “I look horrible and I despise myself.” Really mean it. Flare those negatives up. How does your body react now? Notice: Your shoulders? Your gut? Chest? I’m so taken by this exercise because it spells out that positive and negative energy are about as opposite as you can get. No confusing them. Ask yourself: Which do you prefer?

Secret 4: Map the Psychology of Your Emotions

Why do you feel what you feel? Where do fear of commitment, alpha achieving, or looking on the bright side begin? Which emotional coping styles hinder or serve you? These urgent questions are the life-blood of psychology’s study of emotions and behavior. You need to know your psychological self so unhealthy patterning doesn’t stifle you. Here’s a look at how psychology can liberate your heart and head. I’ll focus on one principle–“You are not your parents”–which is so central to your emotional freedom that it can dictate how you treat yourself and everyone you love.

Applying the Fourth Secret: Map the Psychology of Your Emotions

Take An Emotional Inventory of Your Parents

To get a well-rounded picture of your parents, I’d like you to take an inventory of their top five positive and negative traits. When identifying these traits, try to see your parents as human rather than idealizing or demonizing them. Get their pluses and minuses down on paper so they can stare right back at you. When reviewing the inventory, consider ways your parents’ assets or liabilities impacted you. Also, be truthful about the traits you too possess. If they are positive, embrace them. If they are negative, begin to work with one at a time to free yourself. You don’t have to worry about turning into your parents if you take action not to parrot their dysfunction.

Self-knowledge is a most impressive oracle, crystallizing who you are and can be. As it mounts, expect to feel a coming together inside of you, a beautiful feeling of awakening. I praise consciousness so unflinchingly because it’s the path to freedom.

My Strong, Imagined, Positive Desires

Can Outweigh Negative Belief Patterns

Anything that you practice in your mind until the idea begins to feel natural to you must come to physical fruition.

The Law of Attraction guarantees it.

As you practice new thoughts, reaching for improved emotions, and then see the evidence that the Universe will provide, you will come to know your own true power.

If someone were to tell you that you are experiencing an incurable disease, you could then say with confidence, “I will decide what I live, for I am the creator of my experience.”

If you desire is strong enough, it can outweigh your negative beliefs, and your recovery will begin.

Healing Oracle Cards – Nov 25th, 2011

The root cause of all disease

is a negative attitude about

taking care of yourself.

How do you define “taking care of yourself”?

Create a new self-care practice today.

Observe you comfort level when it comes to being good to yourself.

Discomfort is a wise teacher.

The Ayurvedic tradition of India teaches that the main reason we get sick can be reduced to a lazy or perverse mental attitude, which lead us to ignore the basic principle of good health.

That can mean not only eating the wrong foods and ignoring the cycles of nature, but also failing to control our negative emotions.

As we now know, thousands of years after the wisdom of Ayurveda was first gathered, the stress caused by anxiety, overwork, anger, and grief creates even more damage to the body than a poor or inapropriate diet.

The Greek Christian mystics believe that our negative traits and emotions, which they call “elementals,” accumulate around us and reinforce themselves, gathering ever more negative energy in a kind of downward spiral.

Yet even though we know better, we sometimes act as if we’re not worthy of a truly healthful, supportive life, as if we don’t deserve to be taken care of.

The cure is simple: Pay attention to everything you do that has the potential to affect your health, from food to stress.

The Water Family

The color of the Water family is blue

The Water element is reflective and adaptable

If you have too much of the Water element, you may become too gushy and allow your emotions to pour out all over the place

The Water Dragon

(upright)

“Higher wisdom allows you to be in

control of all that is beneath the surface.”

A blue dragon with a white mane snakes his way across the surface of a vast ocean.

He’s holding an orb of lapis lazuli, which he protects.

Your deeper emotions are now at the surface, and you’re able to swim freely in life’s calmer seas.

You’re aware of your anger, both hot and cold, and can deal with it in your own time instead of aimlessly throwing it at others.

You’ve learned to smile and keep silent even when provoked.

This is a huge step forward in your spiritual development.

Clarity

(reverse)

“You are the stillness in the midst

of turmoil, with inner knowingness

and acceptance.”

A face appears in a waterfall, unmoving, rather like the Zen “uncarved block,” which isn’t affected by the cascading water that flows over it.

A beautiful golden bough hangs over the waterfall, representing spiritual growth.

You’re confused by your lack of emotional response.

This makes you uncertain of your future.

If you’re not careful, you may provoke anger in others as a habitual pattern to make yourself feel alive again.

Remember that what you fear most in your everyday life could become the pathway to wisdom.

Emotions

Like many planes of existence, the emotional plane (the astral) is a part of every one of us here in the physical. Each of us has our own personal filter that either enhances or subdues the emotional body within us, which is why some people are more or less emotional than others.

In this article, I wanted to talk about what emotions are. Emotions stem from the astral plane and yet are just another “filter”-like the physical-for our perception of All That Is. Like the physical, we mistakenly think it the ultimate truth. Now, while the physical seems to be the ultimate truth of physical properties, emotions seem to be the thrust and so called truth of what makes us “human.” Human we are, but only to a certain degree. What we really are is Divine Soul, and yet the soul still experiences and expresses itself through the mental, emotional, and physical bodies. The true bliss we strive for is to understand these filters, to move beyond them (but without condescension) and live the ultimate truth of who we are.

Yes, in being human on this very plane, emotions are an integral part of who we are. When we astral project, the filter of the physical is removed, and these emotions are exposed full force in the astral (because the cumbersome physical is not present to filter the experience of this plane). Our fears, love, and even hatred are enormously amplified. But do you realize that this is only a level and plane of existence that doesn’t reflect our higher self? Ịt is one of many filters that we eventually need to understand so that we may move beyond the control of that particular plane, just as we have to one day fully understand the physical plane so that we can rise above incessant physical desire.

The unfortunate thing about emotions is that they distort truth. It distorts decisions and skews perceptions. It weighs down or elevates something beyond any kind of recognition. And we often wield the force of emotion behind the name of love, court or God. However, law plus emotion is law without reason. Religion imbued with emotion turns into bible thumping, flag burning, war mongering escapades and all the while people justifying their behavior in the “name of God.” All of this is not really in the name of love, court, or God, but in the name of emotion itself. Emotions are the aftermath of our judgment.

Emotion attached to “love” is what causes people to fall in and out of it. However, the highest love, unconditioned Divine Love, is beyond the emotional plane of existence. It’s pure… continual… It has no gut reaction. It does not flow or recede like a tide. It is not contingent on you evoking a sense of awe or beauty within it.

Divine Love is all there is but it gets distorted with emotion. The moment we declare that God’s love is removed from any part of Itself (impossible), we are declaring our ignorance of Divine Love-and hence God. We love to declare that God loves “this nation” more or less than another and thus by default, makes this or that nation more right and just in their killing and judgment over another. However, there is right and wrong (good/bad, ying/yang) within all of us, and yet Divine Love remains a constant. It is more neutral then we can ever imagine possible, for Divine Love does not judge or separate. As an example, I watch children fight and squabble on a playground, but I do not love one any less than the other. All one needs to do is look at how things are being run today to see a bunch of “older children” squabbling on earth’s school yard declaring rules which are not true, the worst being who God does and does not love and then killing in the “name of God”. We are only fooling ourselves and trying to thrust our personal emotional beings into Divine Love, which is not bound by emotion.

You may ask, “How can something be neutral?” It can be neutral for it is not attached to any one thing, but all things. Emotion, like judgment is about division. When you eventually rise above the emotional plane, you exist in a sea of energy that is not divided. Judgment only comes when it has a relation to something else, as does emotion. All That Is, therefore, cannot be judged or divided, which reduces any emotional need.

Ever notice how the true spiritual masters are the quiet ones who speak of peace, serenity, and are devoid of highly charged emotions? It is the raised voice; flailing armed, self-proclaimed gurus on channel 55 that are not speaking truth about Divine Love. Christ on the cross was not emotionally charged screaming his truth. Buddha taught with reason and openness on his lips, even at death. But these true spiritual masters are very rare. As Blaise Pascal, the 17th Century French mathematician, philosopher and theologian once stated “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.” And that is because most temper their faith with highly charged emotion backed by supposed moral conviction.

The challenge for us is not to divide emotion from Divine Love, but see how they co-exist at this level we currently live in. Divine Love permeates all things, which is why you can experience the paradox of “love plus violent emotion”, “love plus hate”, and “love plus envy” but Divine Love does not fully embody any of these things. Know that emotion explodes and separates, whereas Divine Love permeates and binds all things and beings. Understand what emotions are: being in-love, hate, fear, greed, etc. THAT is emotion, but it is not your true higher self.

I’m not advocating emotionless drones. I’m advocating purity. The Divine Love state not dragged down by the energies of the emotional lower plane.

May you realize it and live it.

Emotional Distortion

by Travis Saunders

Can emotion be linked to our instincts or vice versa?

Oh, indeed.

It can be linked to that, but on to the confusion before we get to the clarity.

The information, the light that allows us to see, the chemicals that let us smell and taste, the vibratory behaviour of matter that lets us touch things, and hear things as well, these don’t get turned into emotion.

They are emotion. The emotional pattern is in the energy and only presents itself to your awareness as you come into contact with it.

Evidence to the point:  The smell of ones partner alone, or of an attractive individual, can produce lust or sentimentality, as happens when people smell babies.

More than smell I think, energy also.

Yes, all energy.

The energy itself is emotion.

Now, how do we get so confused?

How do things get so personal?

Well, for the first part, we have little awareness of the “self” process.

So it operates without our awareness, as self doesn’t require awareness to exist.

It is more a function of quantum gravity.

Quantum gravity = love, but we aren’t meant to sit around and be roots without fruit.

Just because quantum gravity/love is the essence of beingness, doesn’t mean we are not meant to be conscious.

Meaning self isn’t an object?

Meaning exactly that.

We treat it as one?

Yes.

Which just means we get horribly confused, which is what leads to the question:  Is there such a thing as over reaction?

No, but there is such a thing as retentive behaviour.

The only emotional distortion is retentive behaviour.

The “I can’t feel that now” attitude?

Holding on too tightly?

Exactly, and false identification with one emotion or a limited set of emotions.

Emotions are not just energy in motion, moving us.

They are potential energy also, and moved by us.

We are capacitors trying to be batteries, and because we insist on seeing ourselves as batteries we can be drained.

A capacitor is just a holding cell.

It doesn’t generate.

Battery generates?

More literally, they degenerate.

This is why they can drain.

They lose their potential energy.

We should let emotions in and let them release vs. storing them up and then at times having them drain all at once?

It would be better management.

If we do not, we cause the information of our minds to degenerate.

We compromise memory.

This has been proven true, even scientifically.

The most obvious indicator of an emotional disorder is memory degradation, repression, etc.

The worse thing I think we hear is “You have no reason to feel that.”

It would be more accurate to say one has no reason to think something, because it’s the use or abuse of awareness that leads to incoherency.

It has nothing to do with emotional nature.

Thought police?

The only thought police that matters is the brains own natural behaviour.

It’s instinct to find coherence, consistency.

Thought can be discontinuous.

I think the harmful thing is believing that crying is only for babies, or any strong emotion.

Oh, that’s a very harmful thing, as well as thinking you should feel anything other than you actually feel at any moment.

Men are taught to ignore pretty much anything emotional.

I think we really mess up our boys when we teach them how to be “tough”.

The teachings males get about emotion are very likely a reason why males don’t survive as long, or as well, as females.

They even have a higher degree of successful suicide.
